Hi, I've lived in Broadmoor for a very long time and have enjoyed many shared recipes from all my neighbors. I'm originally from Kentucky, where eating and cooking is as close to a religion as it is in Louisiana! I grew up on a farm where we grew all of our vegetables, fruits, and meats. It was always plentiful but not usually low calorie. Of course, we were working very hard in the garden and burned the calories. Problem now, is that I still love to eat good food, but I'm not working out in the fields or garden!! Like most of us, we are trying to get more exercise, and looking at ways to still enjoy good food as we entertain our friends and families.

This is an invitation to all of you to share some of your favorites, healthy or not, so we can all enjoy ourselves. When I moved here 35 years ago, you had to wait for someone to die to find a house on the market and I'm not ready for someone to take over my house in beautiful Broadmoor, so I'm trying for healthy, but with fun and flavor !!

(6/1/08) - Since we are grilling out more now, this recipe is great to have as an appetizer, to go on top of steaks, of as a side dish with any meal. They can be baked inside in the oven or on the grill in a big skillet.

MUSHROOMS IN HAPPY SAUCE (Serves 6)

- 2 lbs button mushrooms, cut in half in very large
- 2 sticks of "healthy butter"
- 1 bottle Pickapepper sauce
- 7 cloves of minced garlic, fresh or in a jar

Cook in big skillet on grill or bake in 350 degree oven for 20-30 minutes.
Melt butter and throw everything in a skillet or pan if doing in oven.
Cover with foil in oven or lid on grill.
This can be doubled of halved, depending on the number of friends/family you have.
It is only low calorie if you don't sop your French bread in the left-over sauce in the pan!!

Old Sugar Mill - 5/28/08

I'm just starting to research a story about an old sugar mill that was located on the property between Chateau and Regency Drives. Does the association know either the name of the mill or who owned it? I have calls in to the archives at LSU and Tulane (they have all the sugar records of our state).

Any help would be greatly appreciated. This weekend I plan on trying to talk to a couple of the older people in the neighborhood.

Thanks in advance.

  • Annual Junque Sale - 3/29/08
The second Annual Broadmoor Junque Sale was held on Saturday - Sunday, March 29-30, 2008 at Broadmoor High School. Thanks to everyone who supported our efforts - we made approximately $4200 after expenses. This event was a success because of merchandise donations and also because of the many hours of effort from board members and residents who set up and worked at the sale. Thanks to our volunteers and event coordinator Kerry Beary and to board member John Perkins who cooked delicious hamburgers, sausages and hot dogs at the Perkins Grill.

  • First Annual Junque Sale - 3/24/07
The First Annual Broadmoor Junque Sale was held on Saturday - Sunday, March 24-25, 2007 at Broadmoor High School. The event was well attended and raised over $4500 before expenses. Proceeds were used to fund beautification projects. Many thanks to everyone who donated merchandise and to our team of hard-working volunteers. Special thanks to John Perkins who provided the hot dog, hamburger and cold drink concession.

  • Picnic in the Park - 8/19/06
Our first annual Party in the Park was held on Saturday, July 22nd from 10 AM to 2 PM at Parkview Park across from Woman's Hospital on Airline Highway. The park recently underwent extensive renovations and our picnic event coincided with the official dedication and ribbon cutting by BREC.

Thanks to our supporters - Broadmoor UMC and Broadmoor HS

We want to thank the organizations that help to make our association's work possible year in and year out. The Broadmoor United Methodist Church has provided meeting space for us for many years and we very much appreciate there doing so! In 2007, we asked Broadmoor High School to let us use their courtyard for our Annual Junque Sale and they agreed. Thanks to their support, we were able to raise funds in 2007 for beautification projects, and in 2008 for replacing a damaged sign on Goodwood Boulevard.
